Ranjit Chaliha is a qualified Mechanical Engineer from Jadavpur University, Kolkata. After a short stint with the Assam State Electricity Board, he joined the family tea business in 1961. Since then he has helped shape the tea estate to be one of the top tea estates in Assam. In the early 1980s he had designed and patented the ‘Jubilee Trailer’, an innovative way to transport green tea leaves from the plantation to the factory, with minimal damage. Another patented design of his in 2014 is ‘Varun” , a technology driven device, which helps reduce fuel consumption and ensures consistent level of drying in tea. He initiated installing of the first computerized tea withering system in the world at Korangani Tea Estate n the late 1990s. He has been Chairman of Bharatiya Cha Parishad, an association of tea companies, for three terms. He was the Chairman of the Engineering Committee of Tea Research Association (TRA), Kolkata- the largest tea research facility in the world, for three terms. It was under his Charimanship that the Model Tea Factory (MTF) was set up in TRA’s Jorhat campus. The MTF is vital for experimentation in the different processes of tea manufacture. He has served as a Director with the Assam Power Generation Corporation Limited. He has been the President of the All Assam Tennis Association as well as Vice President of the All India Tennis Association. Ranjit Chaliha is a keen tennis player. At present, Ranjit Chailha is the Chairman of Assam Hospitals Limited., Guwahati. He is married to Upa and they live in Guwahati. They have two sons- Dhrubajit and Debajit.
